The Bishop of Cracow - although without the mitre yet and dressed in a track suit - right away from the canoeing trip he went to Święta Lipka, and from there to Warsaw in Miodowa street. Twenty years later, in 1978 Karol Wojtyła, already being a cardinal, has moved to Rome and stayed there. He has taken charge of St Peter's heritage. It is over 20 years since that event and about 41 years since the memorable holidays which Karol Wojtyła spend with young people by the Wigry lake. But after those 41 years he came back to Suwalki Land again. That time as a Pope. During his visit he stayed in Camaldolese buildings. Once again he sailed around the Wigry Lake and this time it wasn't a canoe but our little ship called "Tryton". Since then the ship has stayed on the Wigry Lake. It is used by tourists who would like to follow Pope's route. It sails every day and every 1,5 hour between 10.00 in the morning and 4.00 in the afternoon. It is made in memory of that incredible cruise which was held on 8th June 1999. The Dear Guest, who has been the St Peter's successor, spend some dearest moments on the board of our little "Tryton". The ship was built in Płock city right before the II World War. In the autumn of 1966, Lieutenant Tadeusz Ostrowski together with Tadeusz Sobolewski, sailed by "Tryton" from Warsaw to Augustów. In 1999, the ship was launched by two cranes from Augustów to the place Wigry Monastery. The engine is muffled, the amount of toxic substances is decreased and the lavatories are made in a closed circulation - all of these are ecological standards which allow "Tryton" to sail around Wigry Lake which is the most important part of Wigry National Park.
The long and very difficult way of life had Romuald who had built 5 hermit houses and a little chapel. That was the beginning of the new monastery. Some time later (1667) the Italian Camaldolese Monks arrived to Suwalki Land. They received the document of foundations, which allowed them to build the Monastery. The document was given by John Kazimierz the King and The Pope Clemens IX. During the years 1694-1745, the Camaldolese Monks built the baroque complex of buildings. There was a church risen on the hill surrounded by two rings of buttresses. There were also risen some more building such as hermit houses, clock tower, chancellor's house, royal house, refectory (dining - room) and doorkeeper's house.
