Wigry - formerly a place of hermits' contemplation - throughout the Pope's visit on 8th - 10th June - it became a place of meditation for him, the Pope - the Pole. It was the first time that John Paul II has visited the old Camaldolese Monastery as the Pope. He had been here before though. The Czarna Hańcza River which flows through the Wigry Lake and Augustów Forest, then it flows into Niemen River, it used to be Karol Wojtyła's the most favourite canoeing route, when he had been just an ordinary priest. He was canoeing down that rout from 16th - 30th July 1954. During the summer of 1958, when he was enjoying one of the canoeing trip around Wigry Lake, he learnt about something very important. It was a decision made by the Pope Pius XII just three months before his death, on 8th July 1958. It said that Karol Wojtyła was appointed to become the titular bishop and the suffragan of Cracow.
